Hydrogen bond dynamics in water studied by depolarized Rayleigh scattering

چکیده
2014 We measured the depolarized Rayleigh light scattering by water from 80°C down to 17°C. The spectra obtained could be analysed into two lines, a broad and a sharp one. From the sharp line we deduced a relaxation time which can be interpreted as a reorientational time due to rotations. The broad line gives a relaxation time which is Arrhenius temperature dependent, with an activation energy E = 2.7 kcal/mole. This shorter time can be associated with the mean lifetime of H-bonds in water and E is the activation energy of the formation and breaking of H-bonds process. This interpretation can be supported by recent measurements on quasi-elastic neutron scattering and by taking into account the librational frequencies from Raman spectroscopy. J. Effect of environment on hydrogen bond dynamics in liquid water.
It is generally accepted that the distinctive properties of water can be ascribed to hydrogen bonding [1]. The fundamental dynamical process of the liquid is the making and breaking of hydrogen bonds. This dynamics, however, is far from being completely understood. Experiments such as infrared absorption and Raman scattering [2], depolarized light scattering [3], and inelastic neutron scatterin...
متن کاملAnisotropic light scattering in water-alcohol mixtures
We have studied the depolarized Rayleigh-Wing light scattering of aqueous solutions of 2-butoxyethanol (C&) as a function of the temperature and concentration. The measured spectra give information on the rotational dynamics of water molecules. Their analysis confirm the amphiphilic character of the ethoxylated alcohol molecules that originates micellar structures. In addition, the water dynami...
متن کاملMolecular Dynamics Simulation of Water in Single WallCarbon Nanotube
The overall aim of this study is to calculate some water properties in the single wall carbon naotubes (SWCNT) and compare them to the bulk water properties to investigate the deviation of water properties inside the SWCNT from those in the bulk. Here some physical and transport properties of water molecules in the single wall carbon nanotube were reported by performing molecular dynamics (MD) ...
متن کاملThe impact of kosmotropes and chaotropes on bulk and hydration shell water dynamics in a model peptide solution
Kosmotropic (order-making) and chaotropic (order-breaking) co-solvents influence stability and biochemical equilibrium in aqueous solutions of proteins, acting indirectly through the structure and dynamics of the hydration water that surrounds the protein molecules. We have investigated the influence of kosmotropic and chaotropic co-solvents on the hydrogen bonding network dynamics of both bulk...
